In the coming weeks, Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) will introduce a bill that would make revenge porn a federal crime, Gizmodo reports. “Today it’s possible to ruin someone’s life with the click of a button, by publishing another person’s private images without their consent,” Speier said. “Our laws haven’t yet caught up with this crime.” The bill is set to be introduced this spring and is designed to create new criminal statutes that apply to people who run revenge porn sites and would also make it a crime to upload and share such content. Even sites that host links to the content could face criminal penalties for enabling distribution, the report states. Maine lawmakers announced a new push for a revenge-porn law today, as well.
