The New York Times reports on a new employee-monitoring platform that combines gamification, performance monitoring and staff transparency in an attempt to increase work efficiency. Critics, however, are concerned the software, made by Silicon Valley-based BetterWorks, sets up a ubiquitous surveillance framework of employees. The system allows staff and management to set goals that can be seen by other employees who can vote “cheers” for good work or “nudges” for poor performance. A digital tree, visible on the system, blossoms with strong worker performance and wilts with poor performance. Data and Society Research Institute Fellow Karen Levy said, “If you distract workers with the idea that they are playing the game, they don’t challenge the rules of the game.” (Registration may be required to access this story.)
