A growing number of start-ups are “betting consumers will pay at least something to keep their data away from prying eyes,” NBC News reports. “The next generation of start-ups, those in the next 10 years that will survive, will be the ones that put security first,” said Wickr CEO Nico Sell, adding, “the benefits of the Internet have been proven and privacy is in demand, and people are willing to pay.” Surveillance and online privacy are also big topics of conversation at SXSW this year, the report states, with speakers such as Julian Assange of WikiLeaks fame and NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.
