A Privacy Perspectives blog post last week delved into the growing existence of and threat from hate speech and imagery promulgated by online trolls. This week, as part of its ongoing “Room for Debate” series, The New York Times features seven expert voices sharing their answers to the question of whether “anonymity on the web (gives) people too much license to heckle and torment others?” The debate covers much ground, from cyber-harassment to the case for online anonymity; from why women and minorities are targets to why dialogue—even one that’s “impolite”—is important to the broader conversation, and from why contextuality and knowledge should be the focus over and above identification to when “trolling” becomes an overused term.
