After UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s successful reelection and a new conservative majority in the UK Parliament, GovInfoSecurity looks at the impacts the new governing coalition will have on privacy and security initiatives in the country. The new coalition is expected to continue investment in cybersecurity and education. Some worry, however, about mass surveillance, so-called “back doors” into encrypted communications and alleged attempts to water down EU-wide data protection negotiations. What’s more, Home Secretary Theresa May is expected to reintroduce the Draft Communications Data Bill—or the “snooper’s charter.” Privacy International’s Carly Nyst said, “Raising the specter of expanded surveillance powers only moments after the election results have emerged is a clear indication of the forthcoming assault on the rights of ordinary British citizens.”
