As smart technology continues integrating into our daily lives, new and unusual privacy issues are emerging, placing additional challenges on privacy professionals. In particular, during a breakout session at the IAPP Europe Data Protection Intensive in London, UK, GM Chief Privacy Officer Jill Phillips, CIPP/US, CIPP/C, rhetorically asked, “Who would have thought a car would produce privacy issues like we’re seeing now?” This post for Privacy Perspectives looks into the issues Phillips raised—many of which may translate into other industry vectors—including design and data security obstacles, generational perceptions of technology and data-ownership concerns. “The auto dilemma is truly new,” said Phillips, “because there is an actual safety issue” at play, which brings up one of the most challenging issues facing connected cars: How should safety be balanced with privacy?
