Facebook announced Thursday that it plans to provide its 1.28 billion users with a privacy checkup and that the default setting for new users’ posts will be to “Friends” only instead of “Public." The New York Times reports the company is worried that users may share less or move to more anonymous-friendly social networks if Facebook doesn’t bolster its privacy protections. The company recently concluded that its growth is predicated on user confidence about sharing intimate information about their lives with the intended audience. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, “Private communication has always been an important part of the picture, and I think it’s increasingly important … Anything we can do that makes people feel more comfortable is really good.” (Registration may be required to access this story.)
