Technology firms and privacy advocates are pressing Congress to place limits on government surveillance powers, The Washington Post reports. This June, the USA PATRIOT Act’s surveillance authorities are set to expire. “We know that there are some in Congress who think that they can get away with reauthorizing the expiring provisions … without any reforms at all,” said the New America Foundation’s Kevin Bankston. In a letter to the White House and lawmakers, the coalition, which includes representatives of Apple, Google, Microsoft and Twitter, said it will oppose legislation that does not ban “bulk collection” of U.S. citizens’ phone records. “The status quo is untenable, and,” the letter states, “it is urgent that Congress move forward with reform.” (Registration may be required to access this story.)
