In a statement Wednesday, eBay announced the company has suffered a hack and urged all customers to change their passwords, Yahoo Tech reports. Reports indicate the breach included e-mail, address, phone number, birthdate and encrypted passwords. An eBay spokesperson told Daily Dashboard, “Out of an abundance of caution, we are asking all eBay users to reset their passwords, even though there is no evidence of unauthorized access to financial information and passwords are encrypted. We’re being proactive—notifying all of our customers around the world, regulators, legislators and privacy and policy influencers.” In a separate breach incident, a U.S. hospital could face “millions of dollars” in fines following the inappropriate dumping of patient records. Meanwhile, a recent study from Trustwave indicates “data breaches increased 53.6 percent in 2013 from 2012, and 54 percent of those breaches were targeted at e-commerce websites” according to its analysis of 691 breach investigations in 24 countries.
