In an in-depth report for ZDNet, Steve Ranger writes how the “EU Data Protection Directive, Data Retention Directive, Safe Harbour and variations in privacy policy”—along with the right to be forgotten—have resulted in “a heady brew for CIOs.” If CIOs want to succeed, they must recognize that “privacy is becoming a bigger and bigger headache for companies—and the CIO is bearing the brunt,” Ranger writes, pointing to recent Forrester research that states, “Privacy regulation is now a topic that no CIO should underestimate as a major risk factor for business.” And, Ranger cautions, breaking those privacy rules can not only land organizations “in hot water” but can put CIOs out of work.
