One of the consequences of the EU Court of Justice’s decision recognizing the right to be forgotten (RTBF) is its influence on other jurisdictions. In this Privacy Tracker post, Renato Opice Blum and Renato Leite Monteiro write about a recent proposal in Brazil’s Congress to implement RTBF in that country. RTBF is not a new concept in Brazil; for years there have been forms of RTBF in the offline world, and now with the new Internet Bill of Rights, there are ways to be forgotten online as well. This new bill is “vague and controversial,” the authors write, adding, it offers as justification “negative pieces of news” and “does not even try to construct on the parameters of the EU´s court and adapt them to the peculiarities of the local scenario.” (IAPP member login required.)
