Following up on his speech in receiving the Privacy Vanguard Award at last week’s IAPP Privacy Academy and CSA Congress, Intel CPO David Hoffman, CIPP/US, lays out the case for making the “Data Innovation Pledge” just as he argues the privacy profession is entering its third phase: The era of data ethics. “The goal is no longer just compliance to a posted privacy policy,” he writes for Privacy Perspectives, “but it is doing the ‘right thing’ to protect individuals.” Making this pledge, he continues, will change lives for the better, instilling trust in the public that stands to benefit from data-driven innovation, but won’t realize that benefit if they don’t trust those managing the data.
