After three and a half years, the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Tracking Protection Working Group has advanced its Tracking Preference Expression (TPE) specifications to last call status, which, according to Justin Brookman’s post on the CDT’s blog, “is a big deal.” The group is now saying the specifications are ready for review and comment, but there’s more work to be done. The TPE specification standardizes the meaning of the Do-Not-Track signal to “tell an advertising network that sees you on different sites that you don’t want them to collect data about you across those distinct contexts.” Now, to complement TPE, the rules need to be standardized for users and browsers—which is the group’s next step.
