Despite a push from Germany to include data protection rules within the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership in the wake of U.S. spying revelations, European Commission Vice President Viviane Reding says data protection is outside of the EU-U.S. pact’s scope, Financial Times reports. “The commission’s view and the position taken by all leaders at the recent European Council is clear: Let’s not mix up the phone tapping issue with the ongoing trade talks,” Reding said. Reding has also called for the EU to create its own intelligence agency by 2020 in order to “level the playing field” with the U.S. Meanwhile, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder says the U.S. is taking note of Europe’s concerns.
