The Home Office's new Communications Capabilities Directorate (CCD) will oversee increased Internet surveillance and implement the £2bn Interception Modernisation Programme (IMP), The Register reports. While intelligence and law enforcement agencies advocate moves to force communications providers to store specific details of their customers' Internet activities, such plans have been criticized by Internet service providers and mobile companies. The CCD is meeting with industry representatives to assuage concerns, a Home Office spokesman says, and "will continue to consider the challenges posed by new technologies, working closely with communications service providers and others to bring forward proposals that command public confidence and demonstrate an appropriate balance between privacy and security."
