The California Supreme Court recently ruled that merchants may not collect ZIP Codes from credit card customers. The decision is expected to have a significant effect on California's retail industry, as "retail stores routinely ask customers for their ZIP codes for both marketing and regional sales forecast," says Scott Koller, CIPP, of McKennon Schindler.
