The Australian reports on the impact of proposed data retention legislation on small Internet service providers (ISPs). While the comments had not been made public previously, the government was cautioned a year ago by a Department of Broadband Communications and the Digital Economy adviser that small ISPs “faced the heaviest financial burden under data retention laws being sought by law enforcement bodies,” the report states. The proposed legislation is the subject of an inquiry by the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Intelligence and Security. Law enforcement officials have said they are not attempting to extend their powers, but advocates caution the laws are “too intrusive on privacy of innocent civilians,” the report states.
