Not everyone is pleased with some of European Commission President-Elect Jean-Claude Juncker’s appointments. In a Q&A with EurActiv, German Green MEP Jan Philipp Albrecht did not mince words on the appointment of Günther Oettinger as commissioner of the digital economy, saying the appointee has “absolutely no previous experience.” Albrecht hinted that the appointment could be a strategic decision against the German government, which, he says, “has not exactly demonstrated that it takes the EU seriously,” adding, “In light of the data protection reforms which were delayed by Germany, it resembles a transfer to the home front.” Albrecht also said Oettinger’s appointment won’t solve the “big problem” caused by the impact of tech giants on the Internet economy.
