Current EDPS Assistant Supervisor Giovanni Buttarelli today moved a step closer to acquiring the lead European Data Protection Supervisor role being vacated by Peter Hustinx. The EU Parliament’s LIBE Committee announced the results of its vote on the shortlist provided by the European Commission, with Buttarelli receiving 34 votes, Baker McKenzie Partner Yann Padova receiving 21 votes and Kramer Levin & Franel Partner Noelle Lenoir receiving four votes. Notably, both Polish DPA Wojciech Wiewiórowski and owner of consultancy firm Professional Support Cinzia Biondi, short-listed by the Commission for the Assistant EDPS role, also received votes for the lead position. Wiewiórowski received far and away the most votes for the Assistant position, with 53. Buttarelli also received nine votes for the assistant position. Parliament as a whole must now vote to accept the committee vote, and then Parliament must confer with the European Council to finally appoint the EDPS and Assistant for a period of five years.
