FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez’s column in the New England Journal of Medicine that mergers of physician practice groups could stifle competition was just the latest example of Ramirez “flashing the agency’s regulatory teeth,” The New York Times reports. Ramirez is pushing to regain the FTC’s prominence by focusing on digital privacy and transactions, the report states, which could lead to more turf battles with groups like the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The FTC recently warned, for example, that the FCC’s net neutrality ruling might infringe on the agency's ability to protect consumers. Ramirez said the goal is to be active in areas that the agency can have the greatest impact. (Registration may be required to access this story.)
