Following recent news that the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) and the UK Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) infiltrated and stole the encryption keys of the world’s largest SIM card manufacturer, Gemalto has released its findings of the incident. According to a Gemalto press release, the company has “reasonable grounds to believe that an operation by NSA and GCHQ probably happened,” but the hack was limited to office networks “and could not have resulted in a massive theft of SIM encryption keys.” Additionally, “intelligence services would only be able to spy on communications on second generation 2G mobile networks” and that 3G and 4G networks “are not vulnerable to this type of attack.”
