The scope and legitimacy of Federal Trade Commission (FTC) authority was in the spotlight Thursday during the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform hearing, “The Federal Trade Commission and Its Section 5 Authority: Prosecutor, Judge and Jury.” The hearing was led by Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA), who took several shots at the regulatory agency for going after small businesses under sometimes “erroneous inquisitions” and for not providing businesses with data security best practices.
