The Department of Justice has issued new policy guidelines detailing the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) by federal law enforcement agencies, UPI reports. According to the guidelines, UAV use will be banned from monitoring activities covered by the First Amendment, including peaceful protests. Additionally, law enforcement must obtain warrants in cases where the subject of an investigation has a reasonable expectation of privacy. The guidelines also call for more transparency. “In all cases, investigations and other activities must be conducted consistent with the Constitution and the laws of the United States,” the guidelines state, “and with our commitment to protecting privacy and civil liberties.” Tech Times notes the guidelines are not enforceable by law.
