Security expert Cesar Cerrudo revealed last year that a number of “connected cities” that use wireless communications to control things like traffic lights were susceptible to cyber-attack, all due to one company’s lack of encryption. The New York Times’ Bits blog reports that a year later, Cerrudo tested those same traffic sensors in San Francisco, and they’re still not encrypted. “This is a real and immediate danger,” Cerrudo says in a report he’ll present at RSA this week. He encourages municipal leaders to think of their cities as requiring similar protection to a corporate network, create computer emergency response teams and restrict and monitor access to their data.
