The Hill reports that “no personal information is more valuable to cyber criminals than a child’s,” noting while adults are often most concerned about their financial information when breaches occur, “it’s their kids’ identities they should be worried about, experts say.” According to the Federal Trade Commission, “A child's Social Security number can be used by identity thieves to apply for government benefits, open bank and credit card accounts, apply for a loan or utility service or rent a place to live.” Separately, researcher danah boyd looks into the questions around protecting students’ privacy in the context of myriad legislation being proposed in the U.S.
