From the online abuse of Robin Williams’ daughter via social media in the days following his tragic death to efforts at Jezebel to address “nightmare trolling” on that site, there’s no question that online anonymity can provide a haven for cyber-abusers. In this post for Privacy Perspectives, Jedidiah Bracy, CIPP/US, CIPP/E, explores the issues around the value of anonymity and the importance of combatting online abuse. “Really, the issue speaks to design,” he writes. “We talk a lot about Privacy by Design, but designing architectures to prevent cyber-abuse should be a worthwhile consideration as well.
