2023 conference recap

Keeping up with privacy challenges in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand

Attendees convened in Sydney for the 12th annual IAPP ANZ Summit. Privacy professionals from Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand discussed pressing topics like cybersecurity incidents, privacy risks to children and biometrics. The EU AI Act as well as AI gevernance and regulation loomed over the event as privacy pros reckoned with this emerging technology and the potential legislation to follow.

This year’s agenda included the following sessions: “Critical Thinkers, Missing Voices,” “Australia's Changing Privacy Landscape: The Customer, Client & the Multinational,” “Global Regulatory Roundtable,” and “Critical Insights on the EU AI Act for Data Protection Professionals.” Presentations are available if you missed a session or were not able to attend the ANZ Summit 2023. We’ve posted the available presentations in the link below with the speakers’ permission.

Finally, Commissioner Michael Webster shared his office’s current focus and future priorities around enforcement of New Zealand’s Privacy Act of 2020, as well as thoughts about developing a culture where personal information is protected and respected.

During the ANZ Summit we were pleased to announce the IAPP Vanguard Award for the Oceania region: Annelies Moens, Managing Director, Privcore.
